Know Your Framing
What to look for to ensure your framing is being done correctly, both psychically and financially:
Make sure that you sign a contract with the framer or builder to ensure that you know what services you are getting and at what cost. If any extras or changes are made, what will your costs be? The contract should have a price outlined by the job or hour. A list of all changes should be made as needed and each signed before work begins. This will ensure that there are no surprises when it comes time to pay the bill.

Ottawa's Capital Carpentry now has a "Change Order Contract." This contract includes any extras or changes from the original plan given to Capital Carpentry. It's signed (by the homeowner) and dated with a description of the change or extra so there is no confusion or headaches when it comes to the bill. Ask anyone who has ever built a home and they would tell you what a stress reliever it would have been to know exactly what their bill was going be. This headache free service is only offered by Ottawa's Capital Carpentry.
Shimming of wood plates to foundation should be done to ensure that the house is level. No foundation is 100% level. Every home should sit perfectly level to ensure properly working windows & doors. If the foundation is not perfectly level or is improperly shimmed the house will settle over time. This causes the drywall to crack, drywall screws & nail heads to pop, and doors and windows will start to squeak and stick. There is another feature of framing that can cause all these problems as well. If chainsaws are used in the framing of your home their rough cut and inaccuracy leads to gaps in the joints of your framing, again leading to settling.

Check framing of floors and walls by looking for any gaps between studs, plates or floor joists. Any gap 1/8” or larger will settle over time and cause cracks in your drywall, or drywall nails & screws to pop, and causes windows & doors to drop out of square resulting in jamming. |
